the future is here, and it SUCKS

recent read: Janelle Monae's The Memory Librarian, a series of short stories set in the universe of her Dirty Computer album. I have not listened to Dirty Computer and I'm honestly not sure what I was expecting out of this book, but I loved it! Janelle Monae can do anything, seems like. For the unfamiliar, this verse involves a surveillance state that deals heavily with memory: memories can be uploaded for currency, they're seen as a public good, and are surveyed, while delinquent populations (aka "dirty computers": queer, black/brown, or anyone else otherwise considered deviant) get their memories wiped as part of reprogramming. Very interesting concept and one that seems uncomfortably plausible at the same time.

My favourite theme in this book was less about memory, though, and more about time. In one story, a couple moves into an apartment that contains a closet where time stops. This one has a lot to say about class difference and ideology versus practice; that's as coherent as I'll get, because this is the one that I finished and then had to stare out the window of the subway for the rest of my commute and not read anything else. In another story, the daughter of a mind-wiped revolutionary receives a magic stone that can turn back time, and she uses it to protect her sister from detainment--after having the most risky night of her life. And then the last story is about kids who develop an altar that takes them into a more hopeful future. The stories also have a lot to say about community care--what happens when your biological family is gone, not necessarily for not wanting you, but because they can't take care of you? What happens when you have to take care of them? When push comes to shove, who throws you under the bus and who can you count on? It's a great book that is explicitly queer, explicitly Afrofuturist, and... explicitly hopeful? In all the stories (with the exception of the time closet one, sort of), the protagonists find a way to hold on, fight back, and reclaim something of their own. Really, REALLY good. Also a book that made me think a lot about how time doesn't necessarily need to be linear (a combination of reading the time altar story, having been really fascinated by Arrival back in college, and reading a fanfiction amnesia story lol). Like, what would be different if we didn't experience time that way, you know?

In the same vein of "fascist surveillance state", I recently read a hockey fanfiction (I know, I know) set in a, now, thankfully safely au 2026, where US-Canada relations deteriorate to the point of cold war and nationalistic terrorism, and the NHL is dissolved to make way for two separate leagues. One guy, who gets given the oldest daughter syndrome treatment in just about every fic as the oldest of three brothers who all play pro hockey, chooses to stay in Canada with his team while his brothers are in the US, and it seems like they cut off contact with him and he has to make hard choices to figure himself out and keep the trust of his teammates. Real interesting shit. Not too shippy either--I don't read hockey RPF for the shipping so much as I read it for everything else going on in hockey RPF. Like the intense and just a little too realistic dystopia AUs.

Soulbonding History: "Destroying your soulbonds is murder" color bar

When we joined the soubonding comms on Livejournal in 2007, we often saw the following bar in people's profile pages:

They're people, friends, lovers. NOT Satan.
Destroying your soulbonds is murder.

(Color bars of this type were common things on Livejournal at the time; I expect because it wasn't an image and thus didn't require imagehosting, saving bandwidth and work.)

Because it is in danger of being lost, I want to credit the originator of this. I also want to talk about some of the context around it, and why it got made.

This is a post about death and murder. )

Soulbonder Etymology: dar'morende and tai'morende

Doing these together because their histories and citations are identical.

tai'morende (noun)
Meaning: 1: originally intended to be “an alternative version of [a] character's entire world inside your head” (Eclective, 2002), but due to misunderstanding apparently became 2: a fictional character who takes on an independent life, but who doesn’t stick around for long (ibid).

dar'morende (noun)
Meaning: 1: original meaning: same as soulbond. Due to misunderstanding, it became 2: a fictional character who takes on an independent life to their creator or audience and sticks around.

Coiner: soulbonder Catherine Rain (Eclective’s 2004 glossary) on the soulbonders' Just For Writers (JFW) AOL mailing list (Eclective 2002).
When: by 1999-9-17 (Lyn)
Where: Soulbonding term, never went further.
Their rise and fall. )

TL;DR: The only reason anyone these days knows these terms existed is because of Eclective. I can’t find anyone else using it except Lyn, once; all other citations go to Eclective's 2004 glossary. These term are the least-known a term can be and still justify being in the glossary.

Many-Selved Etymology: "Headmate"

Hungry Ghosts have discovered they can nerd snipe us by asking us, "Hey, we heard that 'headmate' came from soulbonders, is that true?" We honestly didn't think we'd discover it, but thanks to the amazing power of ljsear.ch, we got a really good start!

Meaning: 1. (RP, original term) the relationship one role-playing character (AKA a sockpuppet or "pup") had to another, as opposed to their relationship to their player (AKA "typist"). 2. The relationship between any tenants of the same vessel.
Coiner: the DesperateFans roleplaying community on Livejournal? (First used by Pollution/mr_p_white?)
When: by 2005/4/18
the rise of headmate )

TL;DR: the term was coined by 2005 by roleplayers (who, if any of them were soulbonders, they sure didn't fess up to it anywhere I saw) and spread through Livejournal via RPers, muses and muns (2006-01), soulbonders (2006-05), before finally getting picked up by multiples (2007-02). With the fall of LJ, the term spread to tumblr, where it became so widespread that even Urban Dictionary heard about it.

If you manage to kick the can back earlier than this, please let me know! RP was never my realm, and my trail goes cold there.

Spirited/Many-Selved Etymological Glossary Index Page (1816-2016)

Sneak: This is a (forever IN-PROGRESS) hub page for all our deep dives into the origination, rise, and fall of terms used for what we loosely call "spirited" or "many-selved" folks from 1816-2016, including: various forms of medical multiplicity (dual consciousness, MPD, DID,etc.), medical backlash multiples (empowered multiples, natural multiples, endogenic multiples), plurals, soulbonders, and whatever else we trip over, just so we can have it all in one place.

We are cutting it at 2016 because that gives us a good 200 year window going back to our earliest medical multi records in English, and also because we do not want to dig into the microlabel boom. Pluralpedia is better for things like that. We might later kick the earliest year back, but I doubt we will go any further into the present than 2016.

Spaceman, by Marc Hempel

While doing sci-fi library magazine organizing, I found this short comic, "Spaceman" by Marc Hempel, that does realitymashing in a really effective cool way! He needs barely any dialogue or text to express the visual concept of daydreaming; it's so good.

And someone on Pillowfort kindly digitized and uploaded it!

Spinning at a spinning wheel - not a tutorial or demonstration of good spinning, and most of the wheel is out of frame so you can see the main ~action. I am still a beginner, and I think I foxed up some of the terminology. But my advisor was curious so I recorded this.

make and make and make

really on this journal game kick now and just ... keep on come up with ideas . not everything get full creation so far , but barrier is comparatively lower than even twine games , so with enough time and energy can actually get through some of these fairly quick .

have kind of funny mix feelings on this , almost ? want to make lots of things , as many of these ideas as possible , because love these ideas and can not find others quite same . but do not want to feel like overproduce and burn out , or to rush things because done now even if not necessarily best state . but also like , shit , really not able to slow down brain like this - brain is on roll , until not .

but genuinely have so many things up for people to look at now that literally run out of colours for analytics graphs and some games have to share colours - and that would be fair with catalogue of years , but this is after like . 1 week . fully aware this pace is silly and unsustainable ! but brain just say , yay fun to make ! and is not otherwise concern .

do not really care to sustain any sort of quota regardless - will upload when upload and not upload when not - but just feel kind of weird about this . happy to make things , happy to get things up , and do not want to spend endless time on pick those things for perfection . guess just also do not want to go other way and make things that turn out terrible . that balance , though ... brain is not good at that .

people assume dyslexia support means " dyslexic friendly " font and nothing else . not even useful for everyone , and dark mode can be especially dyslexia unfriendly . also astigmatism .

fucking hate those fonts , for kossai uneven weight make much harder to read in most cases .

fae gender

after think , and think , and think some more , and really struggle ... decide that best format for faerie gender game idea would actually be 36 word lyric game .
so , fae gender ! use small selection of words to describe gender ... of course , maybe choose to use rules as part of word table too , classic fae loophole after all ;D

(no subject)

Yesterday I was in transit (from "leave my apartment" to "get to friend's house") for uh

well during the drive back from the airport I was like "I have now been travelling for twelve hours" and there was like another hour or so left of that drive???

TOO LONG

(two planes, which is good because it meant I could eat a meal over the layover, but that + traffic on the way back to friend house meant A LONG DAY)

worth it, though, and now I am on Pacific time by virtue of going "please keep me awake until the sun sets", so I ~only~ woke up for real at 4:30am Pacific time (instead of my normal 4:30am Eastern time).

but I am looking forward to FRIEND HANGOUTS where I am NOT dead of "have been travelling all day oh god" and instead merely running on possibly less sleep than preferred but FRIEND TIME will make up for that, it's fine.

(I'm here for a few days and then go down the coast to my family, who I will be staying with longer.)
