Yeah, before pinned posts people would future-date posts to keep them at the top. (It's especially fun to find old defunct accounts who thought that 2010 was impossibly far in the future.)
And yeah, image hosting is definitely one of Dreamwidth's weak points. I do suspect that bandwidth care is why it's able to keep going the way it has, though.
