It's definitely a show that thinks really closely about what immortality/long life is like. I admittedly don't follow a lot of vampire media, which may or may not also contend with these kinds of immortality depictions, but the solo journaling rpg "Thousand Year Old Vampire" has had one of my favorite depictions of the slipperiness of memory and self-concept in the face of eternity. You play as a vampire, newly turned, and then answer prompts through the years and decades and centuries, recording your memories. However, the rules dictate that you can only hold on to a set number of memories in your journal at a time - when you've filled all 9 event slots, any new event must erase a previous one, unless it's been enshrined in one of your 5 Permanent Record slots. I played it as a group over text chat, and eventually when we had to erase our first memory, me and everyone else were having conniptions. The loss of the memory and that chunk of self felt so visceral. Frieren isn't interested in playing with the horror of losing one's own memories, but the monk losing outside recognition of his older (and potentially more laudatory) selves feels akin to this.
